Bristol Palin slams Barack Obama’s gay marriage support

Bristol Palin on The Tonight ShowBristol Palin has slammed US President Barack Obama for announcing his personal support for gay marriage.

Obama explained in an interview with ABC News on Wednesday (May 9) that he changed his stance on gay marriage after consulting with friends, family and servicemen and women.

“When I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone… at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” the President told Robin Roberts.

Bristol, daughter of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, took to her blog on Wednesday (May 9) to attack President Obama’s claim that his young daughters Malia and Sasha helped him change his position on the issue.

“While it’s great to listen to your kids’ ideas, there’s also a time when dads simply need to be dads,” Palin wrote. “In this case, it would’ve been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends’ parents are no doubt lovely people, that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage.”

She continued: “As great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids’ world view.

“In this situation, it was the other way around. I guess we can be glad that Malia and Sasha aren’t younger, or perhaps today’s press conference might have been about appointing Dora the Explorer as Attorney General because of her success in stopping Swiper the Fox.”

Palin also took a swipe at Glee’s portrayals of the LGBT community, writing: “Sometimes dads should lead their family in the right ways of thinking.

“In this case, it would’ve been nice if the President would’ve been an actual leader and helped shape their thoughts instead of merely reflecting what many teenagers think after one too many episodes of Glee.”

Obama’s announcement of his support for gay marriage was met with a more favourable response from celebrities such as Lady GaGa, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Alexander and Eliza Dushku.

Glee’s Jane Lynch also chimed in, tweeting: “Pretty darn happy today. Thanks Mr President, for supporting the dignity of my family and so many others!”

The president’s public declaration came just days after Vice President Joe Biden told Meet The Press that he is “absolutely comfortable” with the LGBT community marrying.
