Emeli Sandé tops UK album chart

British Breakthrough Act: Emeli Sande, perform in support of Coldplay, at The O2 Arena, GreenwichEmeli Sandé has landed at the top of the UK album chart with her debut record Our Version Of Events.

The ‘Next To Me’ singer shifted over 113,000 copies of her LP, which becomes the second fastest-selling album of 2012 so far behind outgoing number one Born To Die by Lana Del Rey, which is at two this week.

Third place goes to Adele’s 21, which rises two in its 56th week on the chart after she bagged six Grammy Awards this week.

Former singles chart champion Gotye achieves the week’s second-highest new entry at four with Making Mirrors, while Maverick Sabre’s Lonely Are The Brave finishes at six after being ousted from the runner-up spot.

The late Whitney Houston re-enters the chart at seven with her 2000 Greatest Hits album, whileThe Essential Whitney Houston, released in the same year, is at 40. Fans have purchased more than 73,000 copies of her albums in total since her passing on February 11.

“The tragic death of Whitney Houston came as a shock to her friends, colleagues and music fans across the world,” Martin Talbot of the Official Charts Company commented.

“Again, the British public is demonstrating its love of Whitney, just as it did for Amy Winehouselast year and Michael Jackson in 2009.”

Meanwhile, Adele’s Grammys success also boosts her 2008 debut album 19 a mighty 14 places up the chart to nine, as Rebecca Ferguson locks in the Top 10 after climbing six with Heaven.

Paul McCartney achieves just one week in the single digits, slipping nine to 12 with Kisses On The Bottom, while David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat and In Case You Didn’t Know by Olly Murs are down four each to 14 and 17 respectively.

Also dropping together are Stereo Typical from Rizzle Kicks and the posthumous Amy Winehouse release Lioness: Hidden Treasures, down seven spots each at 18 and 19. The Black Keys round out the top 20 after falling three from last week’s 17 with El Camino.
