Foo Fighters Headline Radio One’s Big Weekend

And there was a surprise set from Arctic Monkeys…

Foo Fighters headlined the first day of Radio One’s Big Weekend in Carlisle on 14 May.

The US rockers played 15 tracks in their greatest hits set including Times Like These, Learn To Fly, an extended version of All My Life and recent single Rope.

Dave Grohl told the crowd: “We’re only supposed to play for an hour. We have 100 songs. How’s that going to work?” In the end, they played for nearly an hour and a half, bringing to a close day one of the two-day event, which also included sets from Black Eyed Peas, Tinie Tempah, Jessie J, Plan B and Nicole Scherzinger.

Ellie Goulding also performed on the main stage; it was this time last year that Prince William and Kate Middleton watched her at Radio One’s Big Weekend in Bangor, which led to them booking the Starry Eyed singer to play at The Royal Wedding.

Earlier, Arctic Monkeys had opened the day with an unannounced gig on the main stage. Alex Turner and co. performed most of their hits as well as their new single, Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I Moved Your Chair, from their new Suck It And See album, out next month.

Lady GaGa headlines today, 15 May, along with Bruno Mars, Taio Cruz,  My Chemical Romance, The Script and others.
