George Clooney on his Sudan protest arrest
George Clooney has spoken out on his recent arrest.
The Descendants actor was taken into custody on Friday (March 16) while taking part in a protest outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, DC.
While the incident will go on Clooney’s permanent record, the star defended his participation in the protest during an interview on Fox News Sunday.
Accusing Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir of “bombing indiscriminate, innocent civilians with Antonov planes”, Clooney claimed that the leader had “programmed” the country’s citizens into living in fear in order to keep them from a revolution.
“They kill people – one village we were in, there were 34 people killed in the last two months, and it’s a small village – so they kill people, but more than that, they’re keeping them hiding in the rocks, in the caves, so that they can’t farm, and they miss their planting season this year,” he explained.
“This is the oldest society in the world, if you read the Bible. These people have been there forever, and now they’re not going to be able to feed themselves coming up in the next few months.”
Clooney met with US President Barack Obama in the White House on Thursday (March 15) to discuss the crisis in Sudan.
