Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher has admitted that she thought killing off Mike Delfino was “a bad idea”.

Last night’s episode in the US saw Hatcher’s character Susan lose her on-screen husband (James Denton) in a drive-by shooting.

Recalling her reaction to the twist, Hatcher revealed that she felt compelled to offer an alternative storyline for the show’s final ever episode that would keep Mike alive.

“I’ve got to be honest, I think it was a bad idea,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “When I heard about the plan of his death, I pitched a story idea that in the finale he would be in an airport in Bolivia and MJ and I would run into his arms and discover the whole thing had been some undercover witness protection programme.”

Hatcher also suggested that Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry had failed to recognise what fans wanted by killing Mike off.

“It’s sad to me that Susan, who started the series as a single, unloved mother, ends now in the same way,” she said. “I always thought the audience wanted to see Mike and Susan finally happy and safe but that place did not sustain itself for Marc or ABC, I guess.”

Denton has said that he was “surprised” but content with his Desperate Housewives departure.
