The Hunger Games set for massive opening

The Hunger Games is on track for a massive opening.

The highly-anticipated film has sold more than $15m (£9.5m) in advance US tickets, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie could take in as much as $20m (£12.6m) from midnight showings alone. In addition, it is now expected to earn between $130m to $140m (£82m to £89m) this weekend, making it one of the biggest US openings of all time.

The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old chosen to compete in a televised fight to the death. It is based on the first book in a trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

The film also features Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz,Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland.

The Hunger Games opens in US and UK cinemas on March 23 (TODAY)
