Twitter’s official iPhone app to get ‘major upgrade’

Twitter’s official mobile application for Apple’s iPhone is reportedly set to receive a major upgrade, offering a more interactive user experience and other new features.

9to5Mac reports that the microblogging site has recently “come under fire” due to the lack of “power-use features” in its official mobile apps.

The technology site says that Twitter intends to respond with Twitter for iPhone 4.3, which brings new features to the app, including more interactivity, enhanced notifications, better search and improved performance.

Leaked release notes have revealed several details on the app update, which is expected to roll out before the new iOS 6 mobile operating system.

The update apparently will bring a “more interactive tweet view experience”, delivering content previews, videos, images and more when people post tweets containing links to Twitter’s “partner websites”.

Tweets about selected events will now be highlighted on the app, involving Twitter curating all the relevant messages and images to create a “social experience”.

In the Connect tab, there are improvements coming to autocomplete, after Twitter recently rolled out the same fix on its website.

Push notifications have been enhanced to allow users to prioritise the notifications of selected tweeters.

Just like the Tweetbot app, users of the official Twitter app will soon be able to receive “non-interruptive notifications” in their status bar while using the app.

Twitter’s Discover tab will alert users when new content is available for them to review, while trends are to be personalised to the user’s preferences.

Tapping on another user’s avatar will instantly activate their profile page, according to the leaked information.

The iPhone update will also apparently introduce the new Twitter logo to the iPhone and deliver a range of tweaks and bug fixes to the app.

The leaked information suggests that the app update will roll out within the next ten days but it is not clear whether this is actually the case.
