Daniel Sturridge fit for derby return

Daniel Sturridge is on course to be fit for next week’s Merseyside derby.

The Liverpool striker has returned to light training as he continues his recovery from a thigh injury he suffered on international duty with England earlier this month.

The striker will not feature in this weekend’s clash with West Ham, live on Sky Sports 1HD, but could return against Everton if he comes through training with no problems.

“Daniel is doing well and is out on the field doing some work,” said Rodgers.

“He should hopefully be back training at some point next week and will have a chance for the derby.”

“We wouldn’t rush him back because of one game. Unless he’s fit enough to produce for us then I wouldn’t rush it.”

Rodgers also revealed midfielder Joe Allen is set to be sidelined for a few weeks after failing to recover from a knee injury he sustained playing for Wales against Andorra, but that right-back Glen Johnson is in line for a return to training soon.

“Glen should be back training over the course of the weekend but it looks like we’ll be without Joe for two or three weeks,” Rodgers added.

“Joe twisted his knee and it has swelled up again.”
