Emeli Sande and Biffy Clyro for BBC Radio 1 Academy

Emeli Sande and Biffy Clyro will head up this years Radio 1 Academy in Glasgow.

The scheme, aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds, will offer 7,000 free spaces at a range of workshops, gigs, Q&A sessions and master classes.

Sir Richard Branson, Kevin Bridges and Example are also participating.

“I’m really excited to be part of the Radio 1 Academy and this is made even more special as it’s in Glasgow, a city that’s been a huge part of both my life and career,” said Emeli Sande.

“I’m sure it will be a great day working with young music fans on the art of songwriting and I’m looking forward to helping them create something very special.”

Biffy Clyro said they were “excited” to be involved with the project.

“Hopefully we can pass on some of our experiences with younger fans from Scotland and help inspire the next generation of musicians,” they said.

The Academy will take place at Queen Margaret Union in Glasgow from Saturday 10 May to Friday 16 May.

It will open its doors in the run-up to the station’s flagship live music event, Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2014, which takes place at Glasgow Green from 24 to 25 May.
