Matthew McConaughey confirms True Detective exit

Matthew McConaughey has confirmed that he will not be returning for a second season of True Detective.

The actor – who won an Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club – is currently starring alongside Woody Harrelson in the HBO drama.

Speaking to E! News, McConaughey said: “I won’t be back for season two. Season one was finite.”

HBO has yet to confirm whether the series will return for a second season, but creator Nic Pizzolatto has revealed that the network is keen to order a new run.

He added that he would like to see members of the season one cast return, despite plans for the next season to feature new characters in a different setting.

Cary Fukunaga – who has directed every episode of the first season – will not return for True Detective season two.

The first season is airing on Sundays at 9/8c on HBO and on Saturdays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
