PREVIEW: Tom Daley and Usain Bolt to star in Day 9 of Commonwealth Games

Two of the Commonwealths biggest star will compete today, with Tom Daley going for gold in the men’s synchronised 10 metre platform final and Usain Bolt in the heats the men’s 4x100m relay.

Daley won gold in the event alongside Max Brick in Delhi four years ago and will attempt to retain the title at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

Only three other teams will compete in the final, with the Australian duo of Matthew Mitcham and Domonic Bedggood poised to provide the main competition.

The athletics programme continues at Hampden Park with Usain Bolt set to make an appearance for Jamaica in the heats of the men’s 4x100m relay.

The six-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder in the 100m and 200m has not been very active this year after suffering a hamstring injury but has said he will compete in both the heats and final of the relay.

One of the home nations’ best hopes for gold at Hampden Park comes in the men’s pole vault. England’s Steven Lewis, Max Eaves and Luke Cutts as well as Scotland’s Jax Thoirs are all contenders for the title.

Isobel Pooley of England will be hoping for a medal in the women’s high jump, while England duo Jessica Judd and Jenny Meadows and Scotland’s Lynsey Sharp run in the women’s 800m final. Tiffany Porter takes on Australia’s Olympic champion Sally Pearson in the final of the women’s 100m hurdles.

The home nations clinched four gold medals in artistic gymnastics on Thursday and Friday could bring more success as the apparatus finals continue.

Among the highlights are England’s Kristian Thomas on the men’s vault and Becky Downie on the beam.

Elsewhere in Glasgow, the women’s hockey competition reaches its business end with England facing New Zealand for a place in the final.
