Theo Walcott close to signing new Arsenal deal

Theo Walcott is close to signing a new deal at Arsenal according to Arsene Wenger.

The Arsenal manager hinted that Walcott is getting “closer and closer” to signing a new deal at the club.

Walcott scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal beat Wolfsburg 1-0 in the Emirates Cup on Sunday, and Wenger has backed the 26-year-old to commit his long-term future to the club and score plenty more goals this season.

“Not yet but we’re getting closer and closer,” Wenger replied when asked if Walcott had already signed a new contract at the Emirates.

“Hopefully we can finalise it very soon,” he added.

Walcott has confirmed his desire to stay at Arsenal amid questions over his future, and speculation surrounding Wenger signing a new striker.

But Wenger insists that Walcott negates the need to bring in another forward. “It was another goal for Theo and I’m not surprised by that, because I played him through the middle,” he said.

“I’ve always said that he’s a goalscorer because he has the movement, he has the timing of the run, the speed for the finishing, and he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moments.

“When he gets into these positions, he finishes well. I believe that Theo will score goals.”
